At Down the Rabbit Hole Poodles, raising puppies is about so much more than keeping them clean, fed, and loved until they go home.
Those first weeks of life matter.
Our goal is to give each puppy a thoughtful start that helps build confidence, resilience, curiosity, and the ability to transition successfully into life with their future family.
Our puppies are raised in our home as part of everyday life. From their earliest days, they experience age-appropriate handling, enrichment, grooming, household activity, new surfaces, sounds, people, and experiences designed to help prepare them for the world beyond our home.
During the neonatal period, our focus is on keeping mom comfortable and supporting healthy puppy development.
Puppies are handled and observed daily so that we can become familiar with each puppy as an individual while monitoring growth and development.
As they become ready, we introduce age-appropriate developmental exercises and experiences inspired by structured puppy-raising programs such as Puppy Culture, including early neurological stimulation and intentional socialization.
The goal isn't to overwhelm puppies with experiences. It is to introduce the world gradually, positively, and at the appropriate developmental stage.
As puppies grow, their environment grows with them.
They begin experiencing different:
We encourage puppies to investigate new things at their own pace.
A confident dog isn't a dog that has never encountered something unfamiliar. It is a dog that has learned that new experiences can be approached, explored, and worked through.
Our puppies aren't raised separately from everyday life.
They grow up experiencing the normal rhythm of a household — people moving around, doors opening, appliances running, television, conversations, cleaning, grooming, visitors, and all of the little things that eventually become part of life in their new homes.
They also receive plenty of time to sleep, play, explore, and simply be puppies.
We believe there should be a balance between structured experiences and appropriate downtime.
Standard Poodles require lifelong grooming, so we believe grooming preparation should begin long before a puppy visits a professional groomer.
Our puppies are gradually introduced to handling of their:
They are also introduced to brushing and age-appropriate grooming experiences.
Our goal is to help puppies learn that being handled and groomed is simply a normal part of life.
That early foundation can make future grooming, veterinary visits, nail care, and general handling easier for both the dog and their family.
We want our puppies to learn how to think.
As they mature, we introduce opportunities that encourage curiosity, problem solving, recovery, and independence.
Sometimes that means climbing over something unfamiliar.
Sometimes it means figuring out how to get around an obstacle.
Sometimes it simply means hearing a new sound and realizing that everything is okay.
We aren't trying to create puppies that never experience uncertainty. We want to help them develop the confidence to recover, investigate, and move forward.
Before puppies leave us, we begin introducing concepts that will help make the transition into their new homes easier.
Depending on age and developmental readiness, this may include early exposure to:
Puppies are still babies when they go home, so none of these behaviors should be considered completely trained.
Instead, we are giving families a foundation they can continue building on.
The health of our puppies is a priority throughout their time with us.
Puppies receive age-appropriate preventative care and are regularly monitored for growth, development, behavior, and overall condition.
Families receive information about their puppy's care, feeding, preventative health, grooming, training, and transition into their new home.
We also encourage every family to establish a relationship with their own veterinarian shortly after bringing their puppy home.
One of our favorite parts of raising a litter is watching individual personalities begin to emerge.
Some puppies are adventurous.
Some think before jumping into something new.
Some want to be in the middle of everything.
Others would rather watch for a minute before joining in.
As the puppies develop, we spend time observing their confidence, energy level, engagement, independence, recovery, and personalities.
These observations help us get to know each puppy beyond their color or markings and can help families think about which puppy may complement their lifestyle.
Our job doesn't end with producing beautiful Standard Poodles.
We want to raise puppies who have been handled, challenged, loved, groomed, socialized, and thoughtfully prepared for the next stage of their lives.
We cannot control everything a puppy will encounter after leaving our home, and an eight-week-old puppy is still very much a baby.
What we can do is give them a strong beginning.
From there, we pass the torch to their families.
Because raising a wonderful dog isn't something that happens in eight weeks.
It's something we begin together.
Every Down the Rabbit Hole puppy is raised with the hope that the little puppy leaving our home will grow into a confident, loved companion who is truly part of someone's family.
And that's what makes all of the work worth it.
